Course/Module Description:

Since healthcare institutions vary so greatly across national, trans-national, and sub-national contexts, two central questions for comparative healthcare systems research should be what explains this institutional variation, and how this institutional variation matters for the distribution of population health.

Course/Module Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are:

1. To demonstrate a higher level of understanding of the relationship between social and health policy and professional practices
2. To ensure student’s ability to articulate the ethical and legal context of health care and the role of accountability in practice
3. To ensure students use an evidence base for practice
4. To facilitate students functioning in a variety of settings and that they work effectively with members of health care and multi-agency teams to ensure holistic care.

Course/Module Learning Outcomes:

After completion of the course students are expected to be able:

1. To demonstrate an understanding of health care management and delivery
2. To compare and contrast the social, economic and political context of health care delivery at local, national and international level
3. To assess health care needs at the individual, group, and community level and plan measures to promote health and prevent ill-health, taking into account local and national policies that influence service provision
4. To discuss and challenge a variety of primary health care nursing approaches in caring for individuals, families and communities to promote health and improve clinical effectiveness.
