‘Journal for Studies in Management and Planning.’ Reducing unemployment in Nigeria: An evaluation of the
entrepreneurship programmes in Ondo State.
The aim of this study is to appraise Ondo States’s entrepreneurship Business by elaborating of the following
questions: The Indigenes of Ondo State’s Attentiveness to Poverty downgrading schemes being initiated,
Competency of the indigenes of Ondo in Entrepreneurship and Challenges faced by indigenes in acquiring
entrepreneur technique.
In this article, the authors evaluate the rise of unemployment in Nigeria as a whole as the reason for the rise in
entrepreneurship. The poverty levels in Nigeria are quite high. This as a whole has given rise to the emergence of
entrepreneurs. According to Onyali &Akinfolarin (2017), to better make oneself relevant in participating in
exercise of governance of any state, education plays a role in instilling proficiency and wisdom to the society.
For this paper, the author made use of the Stratified sampling and Purposive sampling technique, which was used
within the three local governments, which differ, by their languages. At the end of the study, it was discovered that
to reduce unemployment in the state would be difficult since the indigenes were lacking in sufficient
entrepreneurial skill.
The major issues identified here are the need for the government to proper sensitizes the public of available
opportunities and government-sponsored initiatives. No matter how many initiatives are created, once there is no
proper dispersal of this information, the opportunities will never be realized.
Government can also make the cost of doing business in the country more affordable as this will aid job creation
and provide more opportunities. As well as provide the necessary resources and infrastructure especially good
transport system and electricity supply, which is the main hindrance to the cost of doing business in Ondo State
Nigeria.
In conclusion, the need for empowerment through entrepreneurial schemes cannot be over emphasized. The
government has a duty to sensitize the public via all available channels so people with the skill-set can apply to the

opportunities. In essence, an economy where the unemployment growth rate cannot be curbed is on the road to
low standard of living and increased poverty level.
